I'm waiting for verification for a nearby reservation, already half a day. How long should such a thing take?

The guest has up to 24 hours to complete the verification process.

I had a "pending verification" just lately - it expired after 12 hours.  Unless this is a guest trying to obtain a verified account - then it may be different.
