I guess it depends on the legislation in your country. E.g., I have to ask them to show their ID and moreover, I have to write down their data as it is my legal obligation to register them at the tourist board.

I do, but that is Thai law when having rentals. I need to have a copy of the guests passport in case immigration shows up.

Then ask them to show it. I never had a problem with it, everyone readily showed their documents when I explaied why I needed them.
